The 2022-2023 Forests + Climate Learning Exchange Series (LES), co-hosted by the Forest Carbon and Climate Program (FCCP) and the Society of American Foresters (SAF), invites academics, practitioners, policymakers, and other experts to present innovative and important research, projects, and strategies relating to forest carbon. The series aims to develop and expand forest stakeholder knowledge and perspectives on forest carbon science, management, and strategy.
The events take place the first Wednesday of each month at 3 pm Eastern. Recordings will be posted below following the event.
EFI and the ESA Statistical Ecology Section are hosting this virtual seminar series that demonstrates a variety of quantitative methods applied within Ecology and Environmental Science in the R programming language. Attendees will gain valuable insight into methods that they may or may not be familiar with from experts on a given topic.
The Entomological Society of America (ESA), Entomological Society of Canada (ESC), and the Entomological Society of British Columbia (ESBA) will hold their 2022 ESA, ESC, and ESBC Joint Annual Meeting November 13-16, 2022 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Dates: November 28 – December 23, 2022 (with an additional 2 months of access)
Recent breakthroughs have made artificial intelligence techniques accessible to a wider audience interested in addressing the management and analysis of large ecological datasets. From automatically sorting camera trap data to identifying individuals within your study population, leave this course with the knowledge and skills to generate and deploy machine learning models for your research. In this course, you will first learn how to wrangle your data using R or OpenRefine; create workflows using python environments and Jupyter notebooks; and deploy your own computer vision web application using powerful deep learning libraries.
Students will take the course at their own pace over a four-week period with instructor support. The course will then be open for an additional 2-month period. The course is divided into discrete competency-based modules composed of pre-recorded lecture material and hands-on exercises. Student interaction and instructor support will be provided in the form of email, online discussion forums, and live Q&A sessions each week. Each student will also have the opportunity to meet with the instructor via one-on-one video consultation to discuss their individual project from school or work.
ESA will hold a webinar about the draft Fifth National Climate Assessment, featuring Allison Crimmins November 30 at 12 noon eastern time.
Allison Crimmins is the Director of the National Climate Assessment. She is a climate scientist on detail from EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, where she is leading the fifth National Climate Assessment at the U.S. Global Change Research Program. Allison has expertise in assessing climate impacts and risks, particularly on health and economic damages, and led the 2016 U.S. Climate and Health Assessment.
