Senator Rosa Galvez Selected as the 2022 ESA Regional Policy Award Winner

The Ecological Society of America (ESA) will present its 15th annual Regional Policy Award to the Honorable Rosa Galvez, an independent Senator for Quebec, on Sunday, Aug 14, 5:00pm EDT, during the ESA Annual Meeting Opening Plenary. The ESA annual award recognizes an elected or appointed local policymaker whose record reflects the use of ecological science to inform policy decisions.
“ESA is honored to recognize Senator Galvez,” said ESA President Dennis Ojima. “The Society applauds her work to integrate scientific expertise into policy for climate action.”
Senator Galvez is an environmental engineer, a former professor, an expert in pollution and an independent Senator for Quebec who uses science to inform legislation. In 2016, Galvez was appointed as an independent Senator for Quebec where she chaired the Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources from 2017 to 2019 and is the President of the Parliamentary Network on Climate Change of ParlAmericas.
All aspects of climate change are a priority for her work in Parliament. In 2021, Galvez introduced a Motion in the Senate of Canada to declare a national climate emergency and pursue efforts to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.
“It is a great privilege to be recognized by the Ecological Society of America for my parliamentary work,” said Senator Galvez. “Humanity is facing an existential crisis, yet Canada and the world is not doing enough to reach our climate goals. I make it my mission in the Senate to advocate for stronger climate action and to hold our government accountable to our climate commitments.”
Senator Galvez obtained a doctorate in environmental engineering from McGill University in Montreal. She is a former professor at Laval University in Quebec and a former chair of the university’s Civil and Water Engineering department. Galvez’s areas of expertise include water and wastewater treatment processes, integrated watershed management, sustainable development, municipal and hazardous waste management, soil rehabilitation studies, circular economy, environmental impacts assessment and risk analysis. Galvez is a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, a Fellow of Engineers Canada and a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering.
ESA President Ojima will present the 2022 ESA Regional Policy Award at the beginning of the meeting’s opening plenary Sunday, Aug. 14, at 5:00 PM. This plenary session is open to the public and will be held in Hall 517AB at Palais des Congrès de Montréal (159, rue Saint-Antoine Ouest, 9e étage, Montréal, QC).
