April 2023 Blackologist of the Month

Dr. Gillian Bowser appears examining ecological indicators of climate change within a field of tall grass overlooking mountains on the horizon at the Huascaran National Park in Peru   Original artwork from the Pollinator Hotshot project on public engagement with parks depicts a large brown owl and a blue striped moth sitting side by side atop a net.

Our newest Blackologist of the Month is Dr. Gillian Bowser. An Associate Professor at Colorado State University, Bowser’s research focuses on pollinator conservation. She has worked extensively with the National Park Service to develop and run programs which encourage meaningful community engagement, using art to improve science literacy and facilitate community-led studies. She is especially proud of the work she has been able to do in the Pollinators in Parks program. Dr. Bowser is also heavily involved in the Rocky Mountain Sustainability and Science Network (RMSSN): a program in which government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and academic institutions collaborate to conduct research on natural and cultural resource management issues. A proud member of a family of activists, Dr. Bowser’s scientific superpower is using her experience in community organizing and her skill as an artist to develop applied projects that improve our understanding and stewardship of the ecosystems we call home.
