Collections and Research

The Sam Noble Museum is a research division of the University of Oklahoma. Housing more than 10 million objects and specimens in 12 collections, curators conduct fieldwork and independent research at sites across the United States as well as around the world. Curators have a professorial position in a corresponding OU academic department and teach university classes in addition to their research and curatorial duties.

Here are some highlights of the museum’s collections:

Oklahoma Collection of Genomic Resources

The Sam Noble Museum established the Oklahoma Collection of Genomic Resources in 2006. As an archive of biological tissue samples, this collection is somewhat like a library of genetic biodiversity. Collected and maintained under controlled conditions, these specimens are maintained for current and future research.

Mammalogy

Dating back to 1899, the collection of mammals at the Sam Noble Museum has developed into a significant resource for research, museum exhibits and science education programs. Containing roughly 66,000 cataloged specimens, this collection represents 26 orders, 65 families, 412 genera and more than 850 species; it is the 13th largest collection in the Western Hemisphere.
