Action Alert: Support Science in the America COMPETES Act

Dear ESA Members:

House Democrats unveiled a legislative package called the America COMPETES Act of 2022 that is the companion bill to the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act (USICA) that the Senate passed in June. The bill authorizes Congress to increase funding levels for the National Science Foundation and includes other STEM bills that benefit the research community.

CONTACT your US House Representative NOW and ask them to vote YES on the COMPETES bill by writing a short personal email or calling their office. They may vote this week, so don’t delay.

Key American COMPETES Act highlights:

  • Reauthorizes landmark legislation for the National Science Foundation (NSF) that allows Congress to provide steady, increasing funding levels for NSF.
  • Creates a new NSF Science and Engineering Solutions Directorate.
  • Expands the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program.
  • Includes NSF diversity, equity and inclusion provisions to broaden research. opportunities in underserved communities.
  • Increases authorized funding for the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science from $7 billion to $11.1 billion.
  • Establishes six DOE bioenergy research centers for earth and environment systems science.
