The journal publishes a broad array of research that includes a rapidly expanding envelope of subject matter, techniques, approaches, and concepts: paleoecology through present-day phenomena; evolutionary, population, physiological, community, and ecosystem ecology, as well as biogeochemistry; inclusive of descriptive, comparative, experimental, mathematical, statistical, and interdisciplinary approaches.

Ecological Applications

A source for environmental decision making

Ecological Applications is concerned broadly with the applications of ecological science to environmental problems. It publishes papers that develop scientific principles to support environmental decision-making, as well as papers that discuss the application of ecological concepts to environmental issues, policy, and management. Papers may report on experimental tests, actual applications, scientific decision support techniques, economic analyses, social implications of environmental issues, or other relevant topics. Statistical or experimental methods papers that support research and applications are welcome. Papers submitted to Ecological Applications should be accessible to both scholars and practitioners.

Earth Stewardship

The new international journal Earth Stewardship targets novel contributions arising from transdisciplinary collaborations between scientists and diverse social sectors to shape a sustainable future for nature and society on planet Earth. It will be the first publication of the Ecological Society of America to target the integration and convergence of the natural and social sciences and humanities, and the technical, environmental, cultural, and Indigenous knowledge held by local practitioners. This integrative approach aims to both advance sustainability and stewardship theory and practice, while creating transformative solutions for complex problems.

Issues in Ecology (1997-2021)

“Issues in Ecology” uses commonly understood language to report the consensus of a panel of scientific experts on issues related to the environment. The audience for “Issues in Ecology” includes decision-makers at all levels for whom an objective presentation of the underlying science will increase the occurrence of ecologically informed decisions. “Issues in Ecology” aims to build public understanding of the importance of the products and services provided by the environment to society.
