SRM Conference: Classification Field Trip in Sacramento, CA

On Wednesday, February 4, 2015, Panel Members Todd Keeler-Wolf and Alexa McKerrow hosted an all day field trip at the Society for Range Management’s  2015 Annual Meeting in Sacramento, CA.

The field trip was called “Introduction to the National Vegetation Classification, and its Value for Range Management.” The demonstrated the way vegetation is classified and focused on several different kinds of rangeland in the Sacramento Valley and adjacent foothills of the Sierra Nevada. They visited working landscapes and ecological reserves. These served as a backdrop for a discussion of the terminology of the NVC and discussed real world applications to range management in the Mediterranean ecosystems of California. The field trip emphasized the value of the standard definitions as they apply to detecting status and trends of rangeland conditions.
