2014 Rangeland Ecology Section Newsletter

22 July 2014

Dear ESA Rangeland Ecology Section Members,

Greetings and updates from the current ESA Rangeland Ecology Section Executive Committee: Chair Lizzie King, Vice-Chair David Augustine, Secretary Mari-Vaughn Johnson, and Past-chair Cini Brown.

1. SECTION OFFICER ELECTION

You recently an election ballot for the next ESA-RE Section officers.

Please hit reply and type in your yeas or nays.  With only one candidate for each position, it’ll only take a few seconds!

2. 2014 ESA MEETING IN SACRAMENTO:

A.  BUSINESSS MEETING: Monday Aug. 11, 11:45 AM

This year, the meeting/lunch is BROWN BAG due to comically absurd catering prices ($50 each for a box lunch & can o’ soda).  The money we saved is going to student awards, which we felt was a better use of your section dues!  We will be handing out those awards at the meeting, recognizing 4 stellar young ecologists.  We will also be brainstorming and planning for symposia and/or organized sessions for next year’s meeting.  Please come and participate!

B. BOOTH: EXHIBITION HALL

We will have a booth at the 2014 ESA meeting in Sacramento.  Our displays will provide cool educational materials and fun facts about rangeland ecology, free lollipops, plus a quiz contest each afternoon during the poster session.  Come by, enter the quiz, and get a chance to win an ESA Rangeland Ecology Section mug!

C. SYMPOSIUM: Tuesday Aug 12, 8:00-11:30 AM

We are sponsoring a terrific symposium: Extreme Weather and Climate Events: Understanding and Adapting to Ecosystem Responses.  It’s got a great lineup of talks focusing on rangelands, National Parks, and National Forests.  Don’t miss it!

We hope to see you all in Sacramento.  Please don’t hesitate to communicate with us if there are ways you’d like to see the Section better fulfill your expectations and needs.

Best,

Lizzie, David, Mari-Vaughn, and Cini
