All politics is local: how local governments will lead (and win) on global warming
Ron Sims is the elected Executive for King County, Washington and a leader in the effort to fight the harmful effects of global warming.
Over his nine years in office, Executive Sims has worked to save endangered salmon, built the largest hybrid articulated bus fleet in the country, contained sprawl, conserved vast tracts of forest and green space, and implemented some of most forward-looking land use policies in the nation. Most recently Sims has moved for King County to become the first county in the nation to join the Chicago Climate Exchange, an effort to introduce market forces on global warming and to push for a federal cap on greenhouse gas emissions.
Born in Spokane in 1948, Sims is the son of Lydia Sims and the late Reverend James, both long time civic activists in Spokane. He earned a B.A. in Psychology from Central Washington University, where he was student body president in his senior year. Sims, his wife Cayan Topacio, and his three sons, Douglas, Daniel, and Aaron, live in South Seattle, Washington.
