ESA welcomes first cohort of fellows & announces early career fellows program
The Society’s first Fellows were notified in September 2012 and are listed on ESA’s webpage. Fellows are elected for life. The first group of Early Career Fellows will be announced in 2013. “Our goals are to honor our members and to support their competitiveness and advancement to leadership positions in the Society, at their institutions and in broader society,” said ESA Awards Committee Chair Alan Hastings.
New Issues in Ecology
ESA’s latest Issues in Ecology, Issue #16, “The role of landscape connectivity in planning and implementing conservation and restoration priorities” is available free as a pdf here. A team of researchers, managers, and ecological risk assessors review the current state-of-the-art in landscape connectivity planning, offering models, case studies, and advice for coping with the uncertainty inherent in dynamic, real-world conditions. Support for SEEDS leadership meeting
The Mitsubishi Corporation Foundation for the Americas has awarded ESA’s Strategies for Ecology Education, Diversity and Sustainability (SEEDS) a grant to support its Leadership Development program. The SEEDS Leadership Meeting will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana in February 2013 at Dillard University and will focus on ecological recovery and prevention of environmental disasters. Governing Board positions (starting August 2013): President-Elect David Inouye, Vice President for Science Valerie Eviner, Secretary Charlie Canham, Member at Large Carmen Cid. Board of Professional Certification: (starting January 2013) Judi Durda and Dale Strickland.
ESA and scientific publishing
President Scott Collins appointed an ad hoc committee charged to envision the future of scientific publishing and explore the implications of various open access scenarios for the Society. The special committee will prepare a report for the May 2013 Governing Board meeting. In addition, the January 2013 ESA Bulletin will include an article by Collins,Vice President for Science Deborah Goldberg, Publications Chair Josh Schimel and Executive Director Katherine McCarter that lays out the Society’s philosophy and history of publishing and provides an overview of new trends in open access publishing.
