1. Highlights of the FAMU/ Grape and Wine Research Sciences Program

The FAMU Viticulture Center is recognized internationally for excellence in warm climate grape research and facilitator of outstanding academic programs for experiential learning and student training. The Center is the only specialized research program among the 1890 colleges and universities dedicated to grape and wine, and it is a national leader in muscadine grape research.

By the USDA charter, the FAMU/ Viticulture Center maintains the most extensive muscadine grape germplasm collection in the world and is serving as one of the five National Clean Plant Centers for Grapes. Capitalizing on the close industry-clientele partnership, our economically feasible and accelerated breeding pipeline has allowed only within the last 2 years to release 3 new patented American native grape cultivars: ‘Floriana,’ ‘Florida Onyx’ and ‘Blanc du Soleil.’

This tour will include discussion from researchers and students about current research going on at the center as well as a walk in the vineyard and wine tasting during your visit!

The registration cost for this event is $20.00 and will include snacks, drinks, and transportation.

2. National High Magnetic Field Laboratory Tour

The only facility of its kind in the United States, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab) is the largest and highest-powered magnet laboratory in the world. Every year, more than a thousand scientists from dozens of countries come to use our unique magnets with the support of highly experienced staff scientists and technicians. Thanks to funding from the National Science Foundation and the State of Florida, these researchers use our facilities for free, probing fundamental questions about materials, energy and life. Their findings result in more than 400 scientific publications a year in peer-reviewed journals such as Nature, Science and Physical Review Letters. The MagLab has several world records and on the tour, you will see some magnets in the Guinness Book of World Records, as well as some of the strongest magnetic fields on the planet.

UPDATE: We have a van able to take folks to the MagLab! If you need a ride, please meet us 2:00PM, at the LDC Registration desk located in the H Manning Efferson Student Union Building on the campus of Florida A&M University. The address is 1628 S Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Tallahassee, FL 32307
