In the September issue of Ecological Applications, Magel et al. show that on tropical reefs it is not just the coral animals that are susceptible to heat stress. In the equatorial Paciﬁc Ocean, reef ﬁsh abundance and biomass halved during heat stress induced by the 2015–2016 El Niño, presumably as the ﬁsh moved to deeper, cooler waters. One year afterwards however, reef ﬁshes had rebounded.

Biology Graduate Student Publishes in Ecology

Biology graduate student Alexandra Gulick, with co-authors from the National Park Service and the UF Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research, recently published a paper in Ecology. Results of the study show that grazing by recovering green turtle populations stimulates seagrass productivity, and that grazing intensity has a relevant role in regulating the productivity of Caribbean seagrass meadows.
