C&E Section Officer Roles

Elected Officers

Chairperson: The Chairperson shall preside at the business meeting of the Section, shall authorize expenditures of Section funds, and shall promote in every reasonable way the interests of the Section. The Chairperson shall serve for a term of one year, following service as the
Chairperson-Elect. The Chairperson shall represent the Section on the Council of the Society, and shall appoint representatives to standing ESA committees, as well as appointing Section committees as required to promote the interests of the Section. Such committees shall serve until the next annual meeting of the Section and may be reappointed at the discretion of the Chairperson. The Chairperson may appoint a Webmaster. This description is derived from the Section Bylaws. Additional duties may be assumed by the Chairperson.

Chairperson-Elect: The Chairperson-Elect shall arrange the program for all meetings and activities of the Section, and shall assume the duties of the Chairperson  whenever that person is unable to act. The Chairperson-Elect is to assume the position of the Chairperson after one year’s duty, or in the event that the Chairperson is no longer able to perform their required duties. The Chairperson-Elect shall serve for a term of one year and shall then become the Chairperson. This description is derived from the Section Bylaws. Additional duties may be assumed by the Chairperson-elect.

Secretary: The Secretary shall keep the records of the Section, including a current membership and mailing list. The Secretary will communicate Section activities through an electronic newsletter. The Secretary shall serve for a term of two years, and shall be eligible for reelection. This description is derived from the Section Bylaws. Additional duties may be assumed by the Secretary.

Appointed Officers

Editorial Roles

Editors: The C&E Section editorial positions include Editor-in-Chief, Managing Editors, and Associate Editors. These roles work in coordination with each other and the C&E elected officers to coordinate the overall editorial vision and production of the Section.

Webmaster: The webmaster manages the C&E Section website, including design and updates. This role works in close coordination with relevant ESA staff.

Social Media Editor(s): Section Social Media Editors manage the Section’s accounts. These roles work in coordination with each other, the Editorial leadership, and C&E elected officers to coordinate the overall editorial vision and production of the Section.

Section Liaisons

Student Section Liaison: The Student Section Liaison position was created in 2018 to not only foster collaboration but to increase awareness among students of opportunities to professionalize their science communication and engage in DEI initiatives. Current student members will be the next generation of ESA leaders and are thus critical voices to include in conversations around the value of science communication as a career path or skill. Student section leaders have been active in hosting science communication and engagement-related workshops at annual meetings, including a ComSciCon event at ESA 2018, which suggests increased engagement between our sections is mutually beneficial.

Policy Section Liaison: The Policy Section Liaison position was created in 2018 to build a stronger connection between the two sections given the natural link between communication and engagement and science
