In this article inĀ Nature Biotechnology, Maximiliaan Schillebeeckx, Brett Maricque, and Cory Lewis detail:

  1. The limited availability of academic positions vs number of PhDs granted per year;
  2. What a group of PhD students and postdocs at Washington University-St. Louis are doing to expand their training and career options in light of the academic job market.

Broadly, the authors call for grassroots initiatives (including students demanding more diversified training) to couple with top-down calls for the same from major funding agencies (e.g., NIH).
