EFI and the ESA Statistical Ecology Section have hosted two rounds of this virtual seminar series that demonstrates a variety of quantitative methods applied within Ecology and Environmental Science in the R programming language. Attendees gain valuable insight into methods that they may or may not be familiar with from experts on a given topic.
The rapid and dangerous decline of fauna worldwide requires creative solutions to improve biodiversity monitoring. Ecoacoustics has greatly improved our ability to monitor biodiversity efficiently across time and space. Continuous survey data – such as those yielded by ecoacoustic monitoring – are essential for informing conservation efforts. This introductory workshop will guide participants through an example passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) workflow, from sampling design to deployment to analysis. Participants will learn about various aspects of PAM, including technology involved, data collection protocols, and data analysis/software options. I will present use cases from projects around the world to highlight the breadth of ways that ecoacoustics can be used for biodiversity monitoring, wildlife management, and conservation. The scientific process mirrors classic story structure, starting with a peaceful state (background knowledge), encountering a problem (call to adventure), addressing it through methods and results (the hero’s task), and concluding with changed circumstances (conclusions). This strong parallel suggests using story structure for writing effective abstracts. Abstracts following this pattern are clear and easy to understand. The workshop explores this parallel through interactive exercises, analyzing examples to highlight the effectiveness of structured abstracts. Attendees will leave better equipped to craft clear and impactful abstracts that convey the significance of their work.
