Habitat Restoration: Addressing Challenges in a Changing World

View Calendar

Hosted by The Wildlife Society's Habitat Restoration and Conservation Working Group

Habitat loss and fragmentation are the leading causes of species losses and declines. Restoration actions are critically needed. But how do we know if we are providing what is needed and will restored areas be adequate and sustainable in the future? In this webinar, Jonathan Haufler with the Ecosystem Management Research Institute will discuss how we can restore needed habitat in strategic locations. Jon will address challenges such as climate change, invasive species, and novel ecosystems. Restoration objectives must start with first understanding what conditions define functional ecosystems for specific locations and then evaluate what can be sustained in the future. Jon will provide examples in various types of ecosystems including forests, shrublands, and grasslands. He will also discuss differences in potential solutions for public versus private lands.

ESA is hosting Valuing Entomology: Enhancing Pay Transparency and Equity to support entomologists as they negotiate compensation packages and seek to increase pay equity for women and entomologists of color. In a panel moderated by Laura Lavine, Washington State University Department of Entomology Chair, Drs. Neeru Gupta, and Christiane Spitzmueller will discuss their research and experience as it relates to pay equity and Nicole Succoop will discuss the tool ESA employs to increase compensation information to benefit all entomologists.

We ecologists all need to negotiate for our jobs, our benefits, collaborations, contracts, and sometimes just in human interactions. Come to learn some tips and tricks to be a better negotiator, hear some panelists discuss their negotiating experiences, and ask questions and discuss successful negotiation. Do you have negotiations coming up in your future? Do you have positive or negative negotiating experiences to share? What do you want to learn about negotiating? This watercooler is intended for everyone: early career ecologists, their mentors, and experienced professionals who have tips to pass on or who are looking for tips to improve. Grab your favorite beverage and join the ESA Education Committee in the conversation about negotiating!

Grasslands and perennial forages across western Canada have revenue streams that are limited to forage production and stock themselves, but they also play a critical role in carbon (C) sequestration. Weā€™ll discuss how specialized grazing systems can alter grassland function, forage production, water infiltration, soil microbial properties, and, ultimately, soil C storage.

Under global change, scientists and conservation practitioners are challenged to develop effective management strategies that can help recover ecosystem processes and functions. The field of restoration ecology is rapidly advancing to meet this challenge through the application of innovative technology and methodology, such as trait-based approaches. When used in restoration, trait-based approaches can help track the mechanisms underlying community assembly and ecosystem function to inform species and site selection. This webinar will introduce trait-based restoration, followed by a woven panel discussion between leaders studying different focal ecosystems within the field. After engaging with the panel, participants will enter breakout discussions on how we can better bridge science and management to overcome current challenges in applying trait-based approaches to restoration.
