Mangroves play a vital role in protecting human habitations from strong storms. But how does that protection affect the mangroves themselves? A team of environmental scientists led by Yu Mo of Trinity College in Dublin harnessed the power of satellites to analyze the damage to mangroves caused by every tropical cyclone around the world since the year 2001. Their results were published in the Ecological Society of America’s journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment.

Bactrian camels (Camelus bactrianus), called тэмээ (or temee) in the Mongolian language, are one of several species of livestock that have provided livelihood to herders in Mongolia for thousands of years. After the transition from socialism to democracy in 1990, institutions for the management of livestock broke down, leading to dramatic increases in livestock numbers (mostly goats and sheep) and a widespread perception of overgrazing and rangeland degradation. In their study in October issue of Ecosphere, Dashbal et al. describe a strategy to re-establish institutions to manage livestock grazing using community-based natural resource management approaches that are informed by vegetation monitoring against rangeland health benchmarks and state-and-transition models and are supported by local and national government as well as market-based incentives. What is termed "resilience-based management" integrates information about ecosystem dynamics with novel governance approaches to improve rangeland conditions at a national scale.
