ESA Statement in Support of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities

The Ecological Society of America condemns the escalating pattern of crimes occurring in our country over the past year against the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities, most recently seen in the horrific murders of women of Asian descent in Atlanta on March 16. We are deeply saddened and disturbed by this violence. The Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism’s survey of police departments in 16 major U.S. cities reports that anti-Asian hate crimes have increased by 149 percent in 2020. We urge ESA members to demonstrate support for ecologists and students of Asian heritage in their places of work, including on campus and in the field. We continue to condemn discrimination in any form and uphold the values of equality expressed in our diversity statement.
