For Students

Dear Students,

DSC_2967

The Applied Ecology Section (AES) offers several student travel awards each year funded primarily from section membership dues.  Please check on the main ESA meeting page for announcements concerning travel awards from other sections.

Below are the guidelines for our 2019 student travel awards. We strongly encourage you to become a member of the Applied Ecology Section to help keep this award funded – note that the section fees are $5, while the awards are $500! Under Applied Ecology Section guidelines, you may apply for multiple travel awards in different sections but you may receive only one ESA section awards. We encourage students to apply to as many travel awards as they are eligible for, but if you accept the AES award, you may not accept another ESA section travel award for the same meeting year.

Student Travel Award 2019

The Applied Ecology Section offers travel grants for students presenting papers or posters at the ESA Annual Meetings. The following describes the policies and procedures of the Section on supporting student travel to the Annual Meeting.

The deadline for receipt of applications is June 1 of each year. We will notify successful applicants by mid-July. Eligibility requirements and application requirements are specified below. Applications which do not comply with these specifications will not be considered.

Policy on Support for Student Travel to ESA meetingsThe Applied Ecology Section seeks to support the students, especially those working in applied studies, in the presentation of their work at the ESA Annual Meeting. Historically, we have also collaborated with the Human Ecology Section to give some of the awards to members of that section.

Amount of SupportThe number and amount of awards will be determined by the section officers and will reflect the availability of funds and the quality of applications received. In the past we have been giving 5-10 awards of around $500 each.

Application Process: Applications will be submitted electronically by June 1, 2019 here, where you will also find all the instructions, including the requirement for a letter of reference from the adviser, also due by June 1. Applications will be evaluated by Section officers or a panel of judges that may be appointed by the Section Chair. Criteria for evaluation will include the quality of the work and its relevance to applied ecology, i.e., your explanation of how the research that you’re presenting fits under “Applied Ecology”, and what are its practical field applications (up to 400 words). We will strive to provide support to a diverse group of applicants, including candidates from historically underrepresented groups.

EligibilityApplicants must be the presenting author of a paper or poster which has been accepted for presentation at the Annual Meeting.  Applicants must be enrolled as a graduate or undergraduate student at the time of their application.  Students, co-authors, employees, and relatives of current section officers (or other judges of applications) are ineligible for this award.
