2022 ESA Leadership Nominations

The ESA Nominations Committee is seeking nominations, including self-nominations, for the following offices that will be on the 2022 ballot.

  • President-Elect
  • Vice President for Finance
  • Member of the Governing Board (formerly Member At-large) (1 seat for election)
  • Member of the Board of Professional Certification (2 seats for election)

Governing Board Priorities

ESA Governing Board members work collectively with the CEO to fulfill ESA’s mission. They define broad policies and metrics for success, and are responsible for and ensure ESA’s legal, financial and ethical integrity. They establish overarching goals for the Society and ensure adequate resources to sustain ESA into the future. Board service includes reviewing monthly updates, staying abreast of program developments and preparing for three 1.5-day meetings (in August, November and May), plus a short winter meeting in February. Board members also serve on Board committees and as liaisons on program committees, which can add several meetings per year depending on the committee.

In the coming years, these are some of the issues on which the Governing Board will be focused:

  • The publishing landscape: Communicating our science is essential to fulfilling the mission of advancing ecology, and it is also by far the largest revenue source for ESA. Open science and open access are rapidly changing the landscape of scientific publishing. The Publications Committee will be evaluating and recommending to the Governing Board new strategies for ESA’s portfolio of journals, including business plans for possible new products.
  • Equity and inclusion: Creating an equitable and inclusive culture is fundamental to all ESA activities and programs. The Governing Board recently appointed a Board Diversity Committee to evaluate how ESA can continue to create a welcoming environmental for all ecologists. We are committee to working toward dismantling structural barriers to participation in both the Society and the scientific profession.
  • Scientific meetings: The ESA Annual Meeting has traditionally been an exciting scientific event for members and an important revenue stream for the Society. The COVID pandemic has altered the nature of scientific meetings, constraining our ability to gather in person but also creating opportunities for further inclusion in the virtual meeting space. The Governing Board will evaluate recommendations from the Meetings Committee to adapt to public health requirements while maximizing the meeting options for our community, shaping future ESA meetings as we evolve from this pandemic.
  • Professional services: While a majority of current ESA members are involved in research, the Society strives to be a professional home for all ecologists, regardless of career field. Several committees are evaluating how we can help each year’s thousands of ecology students navigate a fulfilling scientific career path. For example, the Board of Professional Certification is guiding an expansion of the ESA certification program that includes continuing education requirements and strategic partnerships with other scientific entities — the goal being to expand the program and improve the skill levels of practicing ecologists — with the Governing Board providing oversight and evaluating the investment in this effort. Likewise, the Education Committee will continue to advance the use of ESA’s 4DEE framework for best practices in ecology education, with evaluation and recommendations from the Governing Board.
  • Decision-making: The ESA Public Affairs Committee and the Governing Board have prioritized the promotion of ecological science in decision-making processes, from the international to the local level. The Governing Board will likely be evaluating new recommendations for efforts to advance public policy on climate change and many other environmental issues.
  • Revenue: The Governing Board has ultimate fiduciary responsibility for the Society. Given the changes noted above, the Governing Board will explore additional ways that ESA can meaningfully diversify revenue streams to ensure funding for its programs and activities.
