Effects of Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) on the Distribution of Woody Seedlings and Saplings in a Beech-Maple Forest

Note: Since we collected data on the density of woody seedlings and saplings beneath randomly chosen hemlocks and the maples nearest to each of them, we can use a paired-samples t-test rather than an independent samples one.  The paired-samples t-test is the better choice when we've collected the data in this way, because it's more powerful at detecting a difference between two sample means.  See p.11 in the yellow statistics handout and p.5 of the blue SYSTAT handout of your lab packet for explanations of the difference between paired-samples and independent-samples t-tests.
