2002 Lotka and Volterra Awards Announced
Mark Andersen, our past Chairperson, on behalf of the Theoretical Ecology Section, is pleased to announce the winners of the 2002 ESA Theoretical Ecology Section Lotka and Volterra Awards for best student poster and talk, respectively, in theoretical ecology at the ESA's annual meeting. The winner of the Lotka Award for best poster is Caz Taylor, for her poster "Consequences of an Allee effect on the invasion of Spartina alterniflora in Willapa Bay, WA." The winner of the Volterra Award for best oral presentation is John Haskell for his talk "Home range scaling in fractal environments." This year's winners will each receive $100 worth of books from Sinauer Associates.
We had an exceptionally strong field of contestants this year, making the selection of winners difficult and somewhat agonizing. Still, the field of contestants seems to grow every year, and it's a pleasure to be able to recognize some of the truly outstanding student presentations. On behalf of the Theoretical Ecology Section, we'd like to congratulate the winners for their hard work and dedication, and we thank Sinauer Associates for their continued generous support.
