ESA Microbial Ecology Section Awards

The following awards are available to members of ESA and the Microbial Ecology section. To become a Microbial Ecology section member, check the appropriate box on your ESA membership when registering and/or renewing (http://eservices.esa.org) or email membership(at)esa.org.

Student Travel Awards

Two awards in the amount of $500 each will be made to graduate or undergraduate students presenting a talk at the ESA 2013 meeting. Priority will be given to students whose research connects the field of microbial ecology to the broader ecological community and encompasses the theme of the 2013 meeting “sustainable pathways.”

Applicants should send:

  1. A cover letter, which includes an email address, explaining why their research is the best fit for this award
  2. A copy of the abstract they submitted to ESA
  3. Proof of acceptance of the abstract by ESA
  4. Documentation of ESA and Microbial Ecology section membership
  5. One letter of recommendation from a faculty member/supervisor

Minority Researcher Oral Presentation Award

One award in the amount of $50 will be made to a graduate or undergraduate student who is a member of an under-represented minority group in the STEM areas. The recipient must be presenting an oral presentation at the ESA 2013 meeting, be a member of ESA and a member of the Microbial Ecology section.

  1. A cover letter, which includes an email address, explaining why their qualifications are the best fit for this award
  2. A copy of the abstract they submitted to ESA
  3. Proof of acceptance of the abstract by ESA
  4. Documentation of ESA and Microbial Ecology section membership

Minority Researcher Poster Presentation Award

One award in the amount of $50 will be made to a graduate or undergraduate student who is a member of an under-represented minority group in the STEM areas. The recipient must be presenting poster presentation at the ESA 2013 meeting, be a member of ESA and a member of the Microbial Ecology section.

  2. A copy of the abstract they submitted to ESA
  3. Proof of acceptance of the abstract by ESA
  4. Documentation of ESA and Microbial Ecology section membership

Educational Activities in Microbial Ecology Award

One award in the amount of $50 will be made to an early career (less than 3 years as an assistant professor), postdoc, graduate or undergraduate student who incorporates a significant educational component into their research. This competition is open to both oral and poster presenters. Priority will be given to presentations that use microbial ecology to enhance K-12 or undergraduate education in the STEM areas.

  1. A cover letter, which includes an email address, explaining why their qualifications are the best fit for this award
  2. A copy of the abstract they submitted to ESA
  3. Proof of acceptance of the abstract by ESA
  4. Documentation of ESA and Microbial Ecology section membership
