Environmental Policy Officer: Amy Freitag (Duke)

ABOUT ME & SCIENTIFIC INTERESTS:
I am working toward a PhD in Marine Science and Conservation in Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment. There's a small group of us at the Duke Marine Lab informally named "the Beaufort School of Political Ecology" focused on the human dimensions of ecological thought - both the social and the political. My research focuses on how including different ways of knowing in scientific research might contribute to effective policy-making. The case study I'm using to test this out is water quality in the Albemarle-Pamlico Sound in eastern North Carolina, working with fishermen, scientists, and policymakers. Previously I've worked on changing subsistence resources in interior Alaska with increasing fires, recommendations for success in citizen science upstarts, the evolution of milkweeds across North America, and water stress in a sugarbush in upstate NY.
