January 2011 Update from the Student Section

Hello Students of the Ecological Society of America!

We hope you all had a nice winter break with your loved ones and are excited for another year! This e-mail contains important information to keep you all up to date with the workings of the Student Section and all of the many upcoming opportunities, awards, and events at the upcoming 2011 ESA conference in Austin, TX.

Please forward this e-mail to your institutions ecology departments, groups, and listserves so that other students in Ecology learn about the awards available and remember to join/renew their membership to the ESA Student Section.

The Ecological Society of America has just started a new, open-access, online only journal called Ecosphere. Please consider it when deciding where to publish your findings! For more information visit the journals website: (http://esapubs.org/esapubs/journals/ecosphere.htm).

These awards are only available to Student Section members, so please become a member or renew now (http://www.esa.org/member_services/join_renew.php)! Please be aware that the applications will often require a transcript, letter of recommendation, CV, and short essay. To learn more about the awards and their specific eligibility requirements please visit the ESA - SS website (http://www.esa.org/students/section/node/405).

a) Student Section Travel Award (Domestic and International)
We will award grants to graduate and undergraduate students presenting posters or oral presentations at the meeting. We have awards for students from within and outside of the US. Grants will be awarded to graduate and undergraduate students presenting posters or oral presentations at the meeting, and the amount of the awards will be based on need and travel distance, but will range from $200 - $500 for national awards and $300 - $700 for international awards. Application Deadline: May 31st, 2011

b) Best Undergraduate Poster/Presentation Awards
The Student Section of the Ecological Society of America will award a cash prize ($100) to the best undergraduate student oral presentation and best undergraduate student poster presentation. Application Deadline: May 31st, 2011

c) Outstanding Student Research in Ecology Awards
The ESA Student Section is pleased to sponsor the Annual Outstanding Undergraduate and Graduate Student Research in Ecology Awards program. We will award two students ($75), cash prizes for excellence in research via an outstanding publication. Application Deadline: May 31st, 2011

d) Academic Excellence by Young Women in Ecology
This award ($150) is open to graduate and undergraduate students and PhD recipients within the past 2 years, for academic excellence demonstrated by an outstanding research publication and the nominee’s outreach efforts to promote participation of young women in science. Awardee may be students from within or outside of the US. Application Deadline: May 31st, 2011

e) EcoService Award
The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) in partnership with the Student Section of the Ecological Society of America (ESA-SS) will honor young scientists for their contributions to outreach, eco-service and environmental justice with a cash award of $500 (!!) plusthet a $300 travel award if the student demonstrates financial need. The goal of this award is to engage young ecologists in research that reaches beyond inquiry and into application, outreach, and education. Application Deadline: May 31st, 2011

f) 4th Annual EcoArts competition - refocused this year as the EcoVision competition
The 2011 ESA EcoVision Festival will celebrate outstanding artistic contributions made by ESA members to ecological science through photography and film. There will be prizes ranging from $50 to $150 dollars, plus a number of other prizes from participating sponsors. Application Deadline: May 31st, 2011
