The ESA Student Section is pleased to sponsor the third Outstanding Student Research in Ecology Awards (OSREA) program. We will award two students (one undergraduate and one graduate) cash prizes ($150) and commemorative plaques for excellence in research via an outstanding publication, supported by a strong curriculum vitae and letter of recommendation.
ELIGIBILITY AND NOMINATION: At the time of the nomination deadline (Tuesday June 15th, 2010), the paper must have been published during the last two years (June 15th 2008- June 15th 2010), or accepted for imminent publication, in a peer reviewed journal. The nominee must be an undergraduate student, a graduate (MSc or PhD) student, or have received a PhD after June 15th 2008. The nominee must be first author of the paper and be a member of ESA's Student Section at the time of nomination*. Self-nominations and nominations by colleagues are welcomed. ESA Student Section officers (but chair, vice chair and secretary) are eligible as well. Applicants of all nationalities and backgrounds are welcome.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Applications will be reviewed by an Awards Committee appointed by the chair, vice chair and secretary of the ESA Student Section that will include faculty members of several U.S. research institutions. Papers will be judged based upon the paper’s contribution to the field, including originality, study design and impact.
The applicant must email the following documents with subject line "ESA-SS Outstanding Student Awards".
1. A copy of the paper (While papers in press are valid, papers in review are not)
2. A brief letter (max 200 words) describing the impact of the paper on the field and standing the date of completion of the degree if the nominee is no longer a student. ***Make sure to indicate whether the research was completed during undergraduate or graduate tenure***
3. A brief curriculum vitae of the nominee (max 3 pages at size 12 in Times New Roman font).
4. Only applicants who can attend the ESA 2010 annual conference will be considered. Consequently, at the end of the application, the applicant must write the following line, and sign with initials:
“I commit to attending the Ecological Society of America 2010 annual meeting, and to be present at the ESA Student Section Award Ceremony”**
Additionally, the recommender (preferably the principle investigator under whom the research was carried out) must send a letter of support (max 600 words) which will also confirm the nominee’s eligibility for the award. This letter must be sent SEPARATELY from the rest of the student’s application packet, and directly by the recommender, with the subject line “ESA-SS Outstanding Student Award Recommendation for LAST NAME, FIRST NAME APPLICANT”.
All documents must be submitted to the ESA Student Section secretary (Andrea Kuchy, alkuchy(at)hotmail.com) by Tuesday June 15th, 2010 before 6pm Eastern Standard Time.
We look forward to your applications!
