Going global: resources for US students interested in studying abroad

Monday, August 7, 11 :30 am-1:15 pm
Organizers: Andrea Kuchy, Margaret Kuchy

When the time comes to start thinking about graduate school, few students consider programs in other countries. The combination of time, money, and risk of failure scares most people away from this prospect. But going to graduate school in another country can have tremendous benefits. Some international programs have research facilities that are unmatched throughout the globe. There are many factors that should be considered before leaving the US . This workshop will help to assist participants to begin the process of looking for programs overseas, evaluate programs, and prepare strong application packages. Topics will include but are not limited to: 1) where to begin; 2) before you go; 3) financial matters; 4) living abroad; and 5) returning to the US . Deciding whether or not to use educational consultants and travel advisors; selecting the right program for you; researching countries, supervisors, and study opportunities; accepting and evaluating international offers; finding financial aid; and career planning will be just some of the relevant issues discussed in this workshop. Studying abroad usually requires a great deal of planning and preparation. This workshop is aimed at prospective graduate students, but will also cover topics appropriate for undergraduate students and prospective post-doctorates considering traveling overseas to study. A question and answer session will follow the presentations.
