Broadening Participation in Ecology through
REU Supplemental Programs
ESA’s SEEDS program can help you recruit exemplary students who are underrepresented in the ecology profession for your REU supplemental opportunities through our REU-SEEDS partnership program. SEEDS students in your lab will also benefit from the support of a peer network and professional development offered by SEEDS staff. ESA’s SEEDS program has an exceptional track record of facilitating mentoring among underrepresented undergraduates who are exploring careers in ecology research.
The 2011 field season is our 4th year working in partnership with PIs of REU supplemental opportunities. In an effort to streamline our process, this year we are offering a simplified version of what we have done in previous years.
Mentor responsibilities:
- Enroll in the partnership program by completing an online info sheet by March 7, 2011.
- Build in $1,500 support for partnership student travel to the 2012 ESA Annual Meeting.
- Participate in a SEEDS summer research webinar on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 (someone in your lab can participate in you are unavailable) to explain your opportunity to students in a live, on-line setting.
SEEDS program responsibilities:
- Send a SEEDS Marketplace “REU partnerships” special edition to our listserv (3,000 + contacts), on March 15, March 30, and April 5, 2011.
- Promote, schedule an agenda, and facilitate the summer research webinar on Tuesday March 22.
- Coordinate all student travel arrangements (travel, registration, housing, etc.) for the 2012 ESA Annual Meeting, including participation with the SEEDS meeting mentor program.
