The purpose of our chapter is to further knowledge about Ecology, both on campus and in the community. We will also look into the many ways Ecologists work professionally by inviting speakers from the community to talk about their work. We intend to get involved in ecological research, do community outreach programs, investigate different post-graduate opportunities, and learn how Ecology can be used in conjunction with other fields of study to have a wider impact. |
Plans for 2009-2010
- In this and the upcoming year, we would like to begin going out on field trips to different natural areas where research is taking place, to volunteer at local environmental cleanups and similar functions, and organize hikes with guest naturalists and outdoor experts from our campus and the community. Once the hikes have become well-established we will invite FFA, 4H, and community members to join us in exploring different habitats and learning about the different plants and animals in the area. At our monthly meetings, we would also like to invite guest speakers, such as ecologists and their collaborators with the in the field, to give presentations about what they do.
- Some of our other ideas include working with other organizations on WKU’s campus, such as Green Toppers and the university farm. We would like to collaborate with the Green Toppers, a sustainability club, to apply scientific principles to the actions they are taking with the sustainability of the ecosystems on WKU’s campus. While working with the university farm we will learn and study how agriculture affects the environment. We will then teach those involved in agriculture how to consider their environmental impacts and suggest ways to adjust their practices that would be more beneficial to both their own work as well as the environment.
- Within our home Biology department, individuals will have more opportunity to become involved in graduate research projects. By pairing with graduate students, we will begin networking with future peers, gain research experience, and may have a better opportunity to present some of the research we do. As a group we hope to develop some research projects of our own to conduct on the Upper Green River Biological Preserve which is owned by WKU
