Please welcome one of the newest members of the SEEDS Family: Rogers State University! The purpose of the Rogers State University Biology Club is to serve as a fraternal organization of RSU students who share an interest in biology. All biology majors and non-majors are welcome. The club participates in a number of biology-themed activities, community outreach, and fund-raising projects. Past events include Earth Day celebration, lake cleanups, and holiday events for Christmas and Halloween. At present, the main activities of the RSU Biology Club are directed toward community outreach with the Claremore region. Club members, however, have expressed a desire to expand the mission of the club to incorporate more biologically-themed activities, as well as opening up new avenues for community outreach projects. We believe the mission of the SEEDS organization presents an excellent opportunity to fulfill both objectives. In promoting an interest in ecology among local minority children, club members will have an opportunity to apply learned biological concepts and gain valuable experience as mentors and teachers. Moreover, the association of the club with a prominent professional society (i.e. ESA) will also allow benefit students in their academic and professional careers. |
Plans for 2010-2011
- As present we are planning to participate in several events planned for the RSU Conservation Education Reserve.
- In the fall of 2010, we will assist with several events held in partnership with the Federal TRIO Upward Bound program.
- In the spring of 2011, we will participate in the large annual Earth day event held on the reserve. This event brings in primary and secondary students from the greater NE Oklahoma region including students from Arkansas and Missouri. Live music and a number of nature-related activities are performed.
