"Clayton State Science Association SEEDS Chapter" » Morrow, Georgia
![]() | The mission of the Clayton State University SEEDS Chapter is to promote ecological awareness and the importance of ecological science to biology students, prospective biology students, faculty and individuals everywhere. We also seek to expand and diversify the biological and ecological fields by raising awareness of careers in ecology and of the opportunities that are available to underrepresented students. |
Plans for 2009-2010
- This coming year should be another fruitful year for the CSU SEEDS chapters and its members. Serge will be presenting his portion of the “Integrated Ecology Education: An Evaluation of the Jesters Creek Restoration Project” project at the ESA meeting in New Mexico. Dr. Boudell will serve as a co-author on Serge’s poster. Dr. Boudell is also continuing to mentor a research projects of Serge, Brittany, and John and of another SEEDS chapter members. SEEDS chapter members are planning on a visit to Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER and the University of Georgia Marine Institute for a 2-day trip for SEEDS members to learn about both the marine institute and the ongoing research at GCE-LTER. Our main plans are to conduct our SEEDS special project (as you know) through the execution of the campus wide Research Symposium and Discussion Panel. As we have lost a number of key members, we will also focus on recruitment efforts. We would also like to continue our GK-12 outreach by visiting more students. And, of course, our chapter would like to continue to participate in all SEEDS functions.
Activities of 2008-2009
- We are experiencing turn-over of our some of our most dedicated members, nonetheless, we have accomplished many things are excited about upcoming events. In August, Dr. Boudell and Japhia Jacobo, who both received ESA SEEDS travel awards, presented their research at the ESA meeting in Milwaukee. Dr. Boudell also mentored our now alumni, Serge Farinas and Japhia Jacobo. Japhia, Serge and Dr. Boudell attended many SEEDS events and presented an update of our chapter to ESA attendees. CSU SEEDS recruited new members at the CSU Activities Fair and during a campus radio interview. We held bake sales, for which numerous faculty and students donated baked goods, and raised over $100.00. SEEDS members went on a hike at Dauset Trails Nature Center. CSU SEEDS students that participated in the ESA SEEDS funded special project presented their research during Biology Seminar and Serge presented his part of the project during the department Research Symposium.
- This Spring, we were finally able to conduct outreach activities (we’ve been trying to arrange this for a few years now). We visited McNair Learning Academy and Arnold Elementary where we led activities on ecological food chains and succession. What fun! CSU SEEDS also co-sponsored an ecology event concerning Russia and China with the CSU History Society. Students continued working on their parts of our project, “Integrated Ecology Education: An Evaluation of the Jesters Creek Restoration Project”. We planned on having our campus wide research symposium and discussion panel, but some aspects were not ready to be presented.
