- American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) Diversity Scholars Program
AIBS is now accepting applications and nominations for two awards geared toward promoting the participation of underrepresented minorities in the sciences: AIBS Diversity Scholars Program : Recognizes outstanding minority undergraduate and graduate students. Award includes travel and registration support to scientific meeting of choice, invitation to AIBS annual meeting, and AIBS membership for a full year.
AIBS Diversity Leadership Award: Recognizes programs and initiatives that actively promote a diverse community of biologists. Nominations from scientific societies, k-12 institutions, colleges and universities, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and community groups, as well as institutions such as museums, botanic gardens, and field stations, are all welcomed. Nominations for the Diversity Leadership Award are accepted throughout the year, with reviews conducted twice a year (end of January and end of July). The deadlines for the Diversity Scholar Award are January 15, 2006 (for meetings held between July 1 and December 31, 2006 ) and July 3, 2006 (for meetings held between January 1 and June 30, 2007). American Indian Higher
Education Consortium (AIHEC)
AIHEC is a unique American Indian organization. It was founded in 1972 by
the presidents of the nation’s first six Tribal Colleges, as an informal
collaboration among member colleges. Unlike most professional associations,
it is governed jointly by each member institution. AIHEC’s mission is to
support the work of these colleges and the national movement for tribal
self-determination. Its mission statement identifies four objectives:
maintain commonly held standards of quality in American Indian education;
support the development of new tribally controlled colleges; promote and
assist in the development of legislation to support American Indian higher
education; and encourage greater participation by American Indians in the
development of higher education policy.

American Indian Science
and Engineering Society (AISES)
AISES is an ISU campus based student chapter for the national professional
organization targeting undergraduate and graduate students in science and
engineering majors. It provides tremendous support and opportunities for
students in those fields, resume data banks, scholarships, internships,
summer jobs, networking and placement, as well as leadership development.

American Society of Limnology and Oceanography Minorities Program Meeting
Hampton University’s ASLO and the National Science Foundation offer special
opportunities for under-represented minority students (undergraduate and
graduate) interested in aquatic sciences (oceanography, limnology, stream
ecology, marine biology, fisheries, etc.). Minority students are provided
full support (travel, housing, food, and registration) to participate in the
annual meetings of ASLO. Participants make important professional contacts
that will help them achieve academic and career objectives. Students will
also receive a free membership in ASLO, including a subscription to the
journal Limnology and Oceanography. (First Deadline for Application for
those presenting in regular ASLO sessions, September 25, Second Deadline for
not presenting in ASLO regular sessions, November 30).

Career Intern
Program
The Federal Career Intern Program is designed to help agencies recruit and
attract exceptional individuals into a variety of occupations. It was
created under Executive Order 13162, and is intended for positions at grade
levels GS-5, 7, and 9. In general, individuals are appointed to a 2-year
internship. Upon successful completion of the internships, the interns may
be eligible for permanent placement within an agency.

Cultural Resources
Diversity Program
The Cultural Resources Diversity Program is located within the National
Center for Cultural Resources of the National Park Service. The Program
develops and administers the Cultural Resources Diversity Internship
Program, publishes the newsletter Heritage Matters, participates in
conferences and consults on diversity topics, conducts research projects on
cultural diversity issues, and develops curriculum materials on cultural
resources/historic preservation for colleges and universities, targeting
minority schools.

Diversity Scholars Program
The AIBS Diversity Scholars Program recognizes and promotes the achievements
of underrepresented minorities in biology. The goals of the program are to
Increase the participation of minority biologists in AIBS programs and
activities
Encourage and support the careers of minority students in biology
Provide a welcoming atmosphere for minority students/scientists at the AIBS
annual meeting and other AIBS events.
- Diversity in
Biological Sciences (DIBS) Coalition
DIBS is composed of organizations with interest in promoting diversity in
biology research, education and careers. The coalition seeks to coordinate
diversity efforts in participating organizations. DIBS also seeks to build
minority scientist networks that will link students/scientists in separate
programs and create a more seamless pipeline of opportunities for promotion
of minorities, women and persons with disabilities in biology education and
careers. Informal lunch meetings with DC Metro area representatives of these
societies are held four times a year in Washington DC.

Diversity Outreach Directory
Diversity Outreach Directory lists diversity programs in Science including
Biology and Environmental Science. It also includes listings of
organizations with programs that support the needs of students who are
underrepresented in the biological sciences. The directory includes brief
descriptions of the programs and contact information.

Institute for
Tribal Environmental Professions (ITEP)
"ITEP was established in 1992 with a vision to assist Indian Tribes in the
management of their environmental resources through effective training and
education programs." ITEP was established at NAU in 1992, in cooperation
with USEPA. ITEP trains tribal environmental staff in issues ranging from
compliance inspections, wastewater management, and water and air quality, to
name a few. Educational and internship opportunities for students ranging
from the elementary school level through college are available, as is direct
professional assistance. Our TAMS center provides technical assistance and
training, and the Resource Center can answer questions and furnish aid in a
variety of environmental topics.
- Minorities in
Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS)
MANRRS is a dynamic and growing organization, dedicated to supporting
minority students in agriculturally related careers. As an organization,
MANRRS strives to develop its members by providing leadership and networking
opportunities.
- Minority
Environmental Leadership Development Initiative (MELDI)
MELDI is a new project being launched by the University of Michigan's School
of Natural Resources and Environment. The project aims to enhance the
leadership and career development opportunities available to minority
students and minority environmental professionals. The project seeks to
provide information that will help more minority students embark on careers
in the environmental field. It is also designed to help minority students
and professionals in the environmental field take advantage of networking
and mentoring opportunities.

Minority Scientists Network
The Minority Scientists Network has two major emphases: supporting the
Science, Math and Engineering education of underrepresented minority
students at the undergraduate level; and encouraging those students to make
the transition into graduate education.

Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Employment Opportunities
NRCS is a leader in natural resource conservation, helping private
landowners, and land users, to reduce soil erosion, protect wildlife,
promote good land use, and implement other measures to preserve the nation’s
natural resources for future generations. NRCS offers exciting career
opportunities in natural resources and the environment to students who are
still in college and those who have already graduated. Such positions may be
filled on a part-time, full-time, or intermittent basis.
- Northeast Alliance for
Graduate Education and the Professoriate
The Northeast Alliance Program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst
recruits supports and mentors underrepresented minority students interested
in academic careers so they may pursue PhD’s in science, mathematics or
engineering disciplines. Underrepresented minority students accepted in
Ph.D. SME programs are offered financial support and supportive mentoring to
ensure that their graduate school experiences are rewarding. Application
deadline: September 26.
- National Hispanic
Environmental Council (NHEC)
The NHEC is a national, non-profit, membership based organization founded in
1995. NHEC seeks to educate, unite, and engage our community on
environmental and sustainable developments issues; encourage Hispanics to
actively work and preserve our environment, provide a national voice for
Hispanics before federal, state, and non-profit environmental
decision-makers; and actively assist Hispanics to pursue the many career,
business, and educational, and policy opportunities in the environment and
natural resources field.
- SACNAS (Society for
Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science)
The mission of SACNAS is to encourage Chicano/Latino and Native American
students to pursue graduate education and obtain the advanced degrees
necessary for science research, leadership, and teaching careers at all
levels. For over 30 years, SACNAS has provided strong national leadership in
improving and expanding opportunities for minorities in the scientific
workforce and academia; mentoring college students within science,
mathematics and engineering; as well as, supporting quality pre-college
science education.
- Science
Discovery Center
The Science Diversity Center is a web-based comprehensive one-stop science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educational resource tool
designed (1) to assist federal agencies that fund STEM education initiatives in
sharing timely program and project information in a user-friendly format with
stakeholders, (2) to serve as a tool for sharing information on strategies that
addresses the nation's STEM workforce needs, and (3) to foster increased
participation in STEM fields by individuals from groups currently
underrepresented in STEM fields of study.
- Student
Pugwash USA (SPUSA)
SPUSA is an educational, nonprofit organization that strives to add a dimension
to scientific study that goes beyond formulas and figures. Activities encourage
young people to probe the reasons for scientific advancement and the
implications of technology on citizens' everyday lives. While examining all
sides of an issue, SPUSA increases students' ability to think independently
about the issues that affect society -- issues that range from international
conflict to environmental protection, from genetics research to civil rights.
SPUSA focuses on the interplay that lies at the juncture of science, technology,
and public policy.

Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP)
STEP provides Federal employment opportunities to students who are enrolled
or accepted for enrollment as degree seeking students taking at least a
half-time academic, technical, or vocational course load in an accredited
high school, technical, vocational, 2 or 4 year college or university,
graduate or professional school.

College Recruitment Program (CRP)
The State of Washington offers a broad range of professional career
opportunities for college students, university graduates, and graduate
students. The CRP provides a streamlined process for graduates to compete

- The
Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program
LSAMP is a program designed to develop the comprehensive strategies
necessary to strengthen the preparation and increase the number of minority
students who successfully complete baccalaureates in science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. This objective facilitates the
long-term goal increasing the production of Ph.Ds in STEM fields with an
emphasis on entry into faculty positions. Supported activities include,
among others: student enrichment, such as collaborative learning, skill
development, and mentoring; academic enrichment, such as curricular and
instructional improvement; and direct student support, such as summer
activities. Full Proposals Due: October 15.

Tribal Science Council (TSC)
TSC was created in partnership with tribal representatives to help integrate
Agency and tribal interests, specifically with respect to environmental
science issues. TSC provides a forum for tribes and the EPA to identify
priority environmental science issues and collaboratively design effective
solutions. The Council seeks to increase tribal involvement in EPA's
scientific activities by building bridges between tribal and agency
programs. There are a number of ways you can get involved in the activities
of the National EPA-Tribal Science Council depending on your level of
interest, availability and expertise.

United Native American Student Association (UNASA)
UNASA is the primary support for American Indian students at ISU. It plays a
major role in bringing speakers to campus; and host events as the Annual
Symposium for the American Indian. UNSAS also hosts social gatherings
including potlucks, stick game sessions, and regalia workshops.
