American Chemical Society Project SEED Program
Project SEED is designed to encourage economically disadvantaged high school
students to pursue career opportunities in the chemical sciences During the
summer, students work in the laboratory doing hands-on research guided by a
scientist-mentor. Project SEED is for the student from an economically
disadvantaged background with an annual family income below $32,000 or does
not exceed 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines for family size.
Exceptions can be made for incomes of up to $44,000, depending on family
size and circumstances. Students who have not graduated from high school are
eligible for the Summer I program, and those returning for a second summer
of research may participate in the Summer II program. Application
deadline is February 1.
- Center for
Environmental Studies
CES is an interdisciplinary, environmental research group at Arizona State
University. CES focuses on arid land urban growth studies, with the goal of
sparking collaborations among a wide spectrum of researchers. The center
links the University to the larger community by working with over 30
partners from governmental agencies, industry, the nonprofit sector, and
K-12 students and teachers. CES coordinated a large research project called
the CAP LTER, houses a nonprofit organization called SCENE, and assists in
applied environmental research undertaken by SCERP.
- Ecology
Explorer Program
We have developed and implemented a schoolyard ecology program where
students collect data (arthropods, plants, and birds) similar to CAP LTER
data, enter results into our database, share data with other schools, and
develop hypotheses and experiments to explain their findings. Ecology
Explorers encourages teachers and students to learn about their urban
environment through engaging in scientific inquiry and linking with the
Central Arizona-Phoenix Long-Term Ecological Research (CAP LTER) project at
ASU’s Center for Environmental Studies.

Student Career Experience Program (SCEP)
SCEP is a program that provides experience that is directly related to the
student's educational program and career goals. The definition of a student
is an individual who is enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree
(diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking student and is taking at least a
half-time academic, vocational, or technical course load in an accredited
high school, technical or vocational school, 2 year or 4 year college or

- Student Conservation
Association (SCA) Diversity Internships
SCA provides high school and college students with meaningful conservation
service internships and volunteer opportunities in our National Parks,
Forests and other public lands. An SCA Conservation Crew is a tuition-free,
month long, co-educational outdoor experience where members complete
essential conservation projects as a team in some of the most scenic
locations imaginable. Crews consist of six-to-10 high school student
interns, and are directed by two highly trained and experienced adult crew
leaders. SCA high school crews participate in projects such as trail
building and maintenance; the construction of shelters, rock walls, and
bridges; habitat and riparian restoration; and invasive species removal.
These projects may take place deep in the backcountry, in more accessible
parklands, or within well-populated communities.

Student Intern Program at Casey Trees
At Casey Trees, paid student internships are offered each summer for high
school students. Most work is outdoors caring for young trees, conducting
inventories of existing trees, and communicating with residents about the
importance of trees to our city, our neighborhoods, and to each one of us.
High school interns, all residents of Washington, DC, work in teams led by
college students with backgrounds in forestry, landscape architecture,
community organizing, or related fields. The students work hard weeding,
mulching, and watering trees and must be willing to endure full days of
outdoor work, sometimes in rain or high heat. Twelve high school internships
are being offered with stipends of $1500 for the 6-week program.
-
Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP)

opportunities to students who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment as
degree seeking students taking at least a half-time academic, technical, or
vocational course load in an accredited high school, technical, vocational,
2 or 4 year college or university, graduate or professional school.
