The purpose of our Chapter is to promote minority development in ecology, student involvment in ecology/environmental advocacy in their local area, and environmental and ecological awareness at UNM. UNM is a diverse campus making it a good place to encourage minority students to study ecology. |
Plans for 2007-2008
- We will continue our efforts to develop our chapter and plan for additional activities.
- We still need to schedule the visit of the UTEP SEEDS Chapter to the Sevilleta. We very much want to develop a stronger partnership with students and faculty at UTEP.
- We will plan a regional chapter get-together at Northern Arizona University sometime in Fall 2007.
- We do hope we can organize a field trip to see prairie chicken leks and ranching in spring 2008.
- Our chapter has added a new co-advisor, Dr. Mimi Lam from the University of British Columbia. We plan to invite Dr. Lam to campus to discuss her research, help us build partnerships and to help us generate more interest among the undergraduate students in our SEEDS Chapter.
2006-2007 Activities
- We are still trying to grow our chapter membership via pizza luncheons at which we have undergraduate and graduate student presentations.
- Our chapter had several meetings during which students described their previous summer research experiences. In particular, Rene Aguilera described his participation as an REU student at Florida International University and the Florida Everglades LTER. Rene has submitted a poster abstract to present the results of his REU research at the upcoming ESA meeting in San Jose.
- Chapter Representative Jolene Trujillo presented her research experience as part of an Organization for Tropical Studies REU Sites Program in Costa Rica.
- A UNM graduate student, Bill Dunn, has been working to schedule a SEEDS field trip for interested students to visit a sustainable ranching operation in eastern New Mexico.
