The mission of the Clayton State University SEEDS Chapter is to promote ecological awareness and the importance of ecological science to biology students, prospective biology students, faculty and individuals everywhere. We also seek to expand and diversify the biological and ecological fields by raising awareness of careers in ecology and of the opportunities that are available to underrepresented students.

Plans for 2007-2008
- Dr. Boudell and Serge Farinas, Chapter President, are going to the ESA Annual Meeting in San Jose, California. Dr. Boudell will serve as a mentor for Serge and will also present her research via a poster session and serve as a co-author at an oral session.
- Dr. Boudell is also a co-author of a presentation being given at the Society of Wetland Scientists meeting this summer.
- Dr. Boudell will continue to mentor a research project of Serge's, and of another SEEDS chapter member, Japhia Jacobo, this summer.
- As a chapter, we are planning to go to Adamson Middle School to expose young students to ecology. We will use the Forestry Suppliers F.I.E.L.D. kit, which meets the National Science Education Standards. The students will use math skills to investigate tree populations that are present on site. They will use a variety of tools such as tangent height gauges, increment borers, magnifiers, and also flagging tape to delineate sites. We are very excited about this visit as this is our way of giving back to our community. Charlie, our outgoing Chapter President, is currently negotiating this visit with the principal (he's discussing this with his teachers).
- We are also planning on applying for a Special Project Grant to fund our native plant garden. We are currently contacting members of the Georgia Native Plant Society and the Master Gardeners to assist us with this project.
- SEEDS Chapter members are looking forward to going on more hiking and camping trips this coming academic year.
- We are interested in visiting the Okefenokee Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in southeast Georgia.
- We would like to participate in the Adopt-A-Stream program.
- CSU SEEDS Chapter members would like to visit the University of Georgia Institute of Ecology and School of Forestry to explore graduate school options.
- Our Chapter would like to continue to participate in all SEEDS functions.
2006-2007 Activities
- Our Chapter started functioning as a separate entity from our parent organization, the Clayton State Science Association (CSSA).
- In August, Dr. Boudell, who received an ESA SEEDS travel award, presented her research at the ESA Annual Meeting in Memphis. She also mentored our Chapter President, Charlie Glenn, at her first ESA meeting. Charlie and Dr. Boudell attended many SEEDS events and presented an update of our chapter to ESA attendees.
- CSU SEEDS recruited new members at the CSU Activities Fair and at the new student orientation.
- Serge and Dr. Boudell attended the SEEDS Coweeta LTER field trip, where Dr.Boudell served as a mentor. Both Serge and Dr. Boudell made many new contacts which were fruitful. Serge was offered a summer internship at the Coweeta LTER.
- In the fall, we erected our bulletin board and website.
- In the spring, we elected members into the secretary and treasurer positions.
- We held a bake sale, for which numerous faculty and students donated baked goods, and raised $100.00.
- Both SEEDS and CSSA members volunteered at Noah's Ark, n zoo where we cleaned, made repairs, and wore ourselves out.
- We were a strong presence at Earth Day, where we recruited new members, handed out flyers concerning the role of ecology in people's lives (courtesy of ESA), and presented our research to students and faculty via our poster.
- Everyone was very happy that our maintenance grant was funded and we were able to go to the Georgia Aquarium.
- The maintenance grant also paid for our cabin fees at Coweeta LTER during our trip in April.
- Additionally, the funding will enable us to purchase the Forestry Suppliers F.I.E.L.D. tree kit.
- In early April, Katherine and Jorge visited our campus to give a presentation on opportunities in ecology and the SEEDS program. We gave them a tour of a few of the ecological research sites near campus.
- Along with CSSA, we sponsored the faculty Study Day in April. During the Study Day, faculty came to campus on a Saturday to help students prepare for final exams.
- Finally, both Serge and Dr. Boudell receiveds SEEDS travel awards to help defray the travel costs for the ESA Annual Meeting in California.
