"ASCC SEEDS Environmental Club" » Pago Pago, Amerian Samoa

The purpose of the American Samoa SEEDS Chapter is two-fold. The primary purpose is to provide enhanced educational opportunities and experiences off the island for students interested in ecology and the environment. A second, but important purpose is to benefit the Territory of American Samoa through outreach and service. Outreach projects will be conducted to increase environmental awareness. Service projects will benefit both American Samoa's environment and people.

Activities

"ASCC SEEDS Capacity Building" Special Project

In the 2006-2007 academic year funds were used to support travel costs for fifteen students and two instructors to travel to Savai'i, Western Samoa for a service-learning exchange program. This program was designed to: 1) familiarize students with natural resources found in their island habitats in Western and American Samoa; 2) strengthen the understanding of their use in a Samoan culture context; and 3) provide opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience and skills through participation in community fieldwork. The primary educational objective was for students to demonstrate the importance of environmental stewardship through community service. The program was also developed to recruit more students to the fields of natural resources and marine science. Members conducted educational presentations for fellow ASCC peers, elementary, and high school students on the lessons learned.
