CALL FOR SYMPOSIUM PROPOSALS: 2003 MEETING IN
SAVANNAH, GEORGIA held jointly between ESA and ISEM

We invite you to submit symposium proposals for the ESA Annual Meeting to be held August 3 to August 8, 2003 at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center located on Hutchinson Island in downtown Savannah.

The theme of the meeting is “Uplands to Lowlands: Coastal Processes in a Time of Global Change.” Coastal ecosystems are strongly influenced by both local and global changes. The meeting location and theme provide an excellent opportunity to increase understanding of coastal ecosystems and explore their vulnerability to climate variability and human land uses in the uplands. Proposals for “half-day” symposia (running in length from 2 ˝ hours to 3 ˝ hours) that address this theme will be especially welcome, but any timely subject of broad interest will be considered. Proposals for full-day symposia are not encouraged and will not be accepted unless there have been prior discussions with the Program Chair.

Since the meeting will be held jointly with the International Society for Ecological Modeling – North Atlantic Chapter, proposals for joint ESA/ISEM symposia are encouraged.

Applications must be received on or before Tuesday, September 25, 2002. We urge you to use the electronic symposium submission form which will be available on the ESA Savannah meeting Web Site as of June 15, 2002.

If you are unable to use the electronic form, please use the form below as a template. Proposals should be sent to the ESA Program Chair, Thomas W. Swetnam by email as attachments in Word to: esa@ltrr.arizona.edu. If you are unable to submit your proposal via email, call or write the Program Chair (see below) for instructions on how to proceed. Do not send symposium proposals to ESA Headquarters.

All proposals will be peer-reviewed and ranked by the ESA Program Committee and others during October 2002. Symposia organizers will be notified about which proposals have been accepted and which have been turned down in late November or early December, 2002.

Criteria for acceptance of symposium proposals include scientific merit, novelty and breadth of interest, relation to the meeting theme, financial support from a non-ESA source, and overlap with other recent symposia.

ESA is not able to provide any financial assistance to symposium organizers or to individual symposium participants. Organizers are responsible for making this clear to the participants.

If a proposal is accepted, the organizers will be required to submit a final summary description of the symposium in the correct format no later than January 10, 2003. This summary will appear in the preliminary program and should be written so as to stimulate interest and promote attendance. This description should be submitted on the electronic form posted on the ESA Savannah meeting web site. The correct format also requires a complete and up-to-date listing of organizers names and their institutions, addresses, telephone, fax and email addresses correctly referenced. The title of the symposium should be followed by the descriptive text.

The January 10, 2003 posting should also include a list of confirmed speakers and each speaker's name, institutional affiliation, mailing address, telephone number, fax number and e-mail address as well as a list of times for each presentation.

In addition, it is the responsibility of the organizers to see that each speaker submits a properly formatted individual abstract of their talk by means of the ESA website (accessible via http://www.esa.org/savannah/) by the March 1, 2003 deadline. Do not submit abstracts by any other means. Contact the Program Chair if your situation precludes use of the submission web site.
