WORKSHOPS

Please read these important notes BEFORE reading individual Workshop descriptions.

  • Advance registration by Wednesday, June 29, 2005 , is required for all Workshops. Updates on filled or cancelled Workshops will be posted on the ESA Website under Annual Meeting Alerts. (See http:/www.esa.org/montreal.)

  •  A nominal fee is required for Workshop participation. Fees cover refreshments (e.g., continental breakfast, lunch, beverage, and/or snack break), workshop materials (if any), and between the Palais des congrès de Montréal or offsite Workshop locations. Please refer to the individual description of any Workshop of interest for details.

  •   As locations and times vary, registrants should be sure to note each Workshop’s location and start and ending times. While most Workshops will be held onsite at the Palais des congrès de Montréal, a few will be held at offsite locations. For onsite Workshops, times reflect when programs start and end; for offsite Workshops, times reflect when shuttles to/from offsite locations depart and return to the Palais.

  • In many cases, Scientific Field Trips and Tours and Workshops occur concurrently, either on the same days or during overlapping time slots. Please do NOT register for more than one activity in any given time slot.

  • Please allow sufficient travel time to reach the Palais des congrès de Montréal before for your Workshop begins or Workshop shuttle departs. For Workshops with morning start times you would be well advised to arrive in Montréal on the day prior to the Workshop. 

  • All registrants participating in Sunday Workshops are encouraged to pick up meeting materials at the Meeting Registration Desk in the Viger Hall on Level 1 of the Palais des congrès de Montréal prior to going to their Workshops. Refer to the Registration section for information about desk hours.

  •  Because weekday Workshops are scheduled during the lunchtime break ( 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM ), the fee for each includes a “Grab-and-Go” Lunch ticket. (Three lunch choices will be offered each day, including a vegetarian option.) Weekday Workshop registrants must claim their meeting materials, which will include their Grab-and-Go Lunch ticket(s), at the Meeting Registration Desk before going to these Workshops. These registrants should pick up their Grab-and-Go Lunches in Exhibit Hall 220d on Level 2 of the Palais des congrès de Montréal at 11:30 AM and proceed immediately to their Workshop sessions.

  • Both onsite and offsite Workshops on Sunday, August 7 are scheduled to end in time to allow participants to attend the Opening Ceremony and Public Plenary and the Welcome Mixer. These three events will take place in the Palais des congrès de Montréal.

WK-5: An introduction to state-space models for population viability analysis

WK-6: Interpreting fire history from sediment records of macroscopic charcoal:  Theory, analytical techniques, and future directions

WK-7: Introduction to advanced statistical methods for ecologists

WK-8: Cyberinfrastructure for managing, analyzing, and sharing ecological data and information

WK-9: Combining Great Lake to global spatial scales with quick to extended times for ecological simulation

WK-10: Teaching and learning ecology in the schoolyards

WK-11: (By Invitation Only) Sturgeon in the Caspian Sea : Scaling up from individuals to population estimates to conservation status

WK-12: Pathways to scientific teaching: Design, implement, and analyze

WK-13: Surviving grad school: Balancing the demands of teaching and research

HALF-DAY SUNDAY WORKSHOPS 

WK-14: Lessons from large-scale manipulations of ecosystems and landscapes
