Description:
NEON is
poised to transform ecological research by creating the first national
ecological observation system designed to investigate and forecast ecological
phenomena at regional and continental scales. This workshop is specifically
designed to make ecologists aware of new and exciting information technologies
created through the Science Environment for Ecological Knowledge (SEEK) project
as they consider equipping, upgrading, or expanding individual laboratories or
field stations to meet the needs for NEON. The SEEK project is developing
cyberinfrastructure that will enable ecologists to efficiently capture,
organize, and search for data and analytical processes from their desk-top
computer–ultimately providing scientists with tools previously out of reach.
The primary topics to be covered include: (1)
ecoinformatics; (2) metadata and metadata tools; (3) scientific database
approaches; (5) Grid technologies; and (6) Kepler. The session includes both
hands-on computers activities and lecture with discussion.
