Description:
The
Canadian National Vegetation Classification (CNVC) is being developed as a
standardized classification of plant communities occurring in
Canada
.
It seeks to integrate knowledge of vegetation in relation to environmental
gradients at multiple scales, ranging from continental macroclimate drivers, to
regional climate and landscape factors, to site-specific moisture and nutrient
regimes. Currently, work is underway to define and describe plant associations
and alliances for
Canada
’s
forests and woodlands. This workshop is intended to offer the opportunity for
participants in the CNVC process to engage with other vegetation classification
practitioners. There will be two components: a half-day session for
presentations and discussion on Saturday afternoon, and a full-day field trip on
Sunday. Presentation topics will include CNVC principles, methodology, and
results to date. Particular emphasis will be placed on discussion of
internationally standardized protocols for vegetation classification and data
management, as part of an International Vegetation Classification. The field
trip will explore some of the diversity of terrestrial vegetation communities in
the area north of Montréal.
