Description:
Models are
tools that promote clarity of thought, aid in the design of experiments, and
facilitate interpretation of results. Education in modeling provides an
opportunity to teach skills in quantitative thinking, collaboration, and
cross-disciplinary communication. Although traditional approaches to education
have relied on curricula heavy in statistics and mathematics, there are multiple
ways to educate practicing ecologists in the art and science of modeling.
Curricula that connect models and quantitative thinking to important questions
in ecology have proven to both ignite students’ interest in modeling and to
convey the relevance and usefulness of models. In this workshop, we will explore
different approaches to education in modeling—from individual mentoring, to
traditional quantitative curricula, workshops, classes, and collaborative
research projects. We invite all those currently involved in modeling education
at any level to come join in discussion of objectives, approaches, pitfalls, and
promises.
