Description:
The
science of ecosystem services has great potential to bring together ecologists,
economist, and social scientists in the development of tools for use by a wide
range of governmental, nongovernmental, and industrial sectors interested in
natural resource use and management. The Heinz Center’s State of the
Nation’s Ecosystems Report (2002) stimulated discussion about the use of
ecosystem services in identifying indicators of ecosystem health and
productivity. Since then, ecosystem services have been part of several other
efforts to develop indicators, such as those of the White House Council on
Environmental Quality, and the Sustainable Resources Roundtables on Water,
Rangelands, Minerals, and Forests. In this workshop, we will focus on issues
raised in the treatment of ecosystem services as part of a framework being
developed to assist in the selection and interpretation of indicators for
sustainable resource management. The framework combines systems concepts from
ecology and environmental science, economics, and sociology and is intended to
provide a basis for integration of indicators developed for different resource
systems. A panel of representatives from the
Heinz
Center
,
the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, and the Sustainable Resources Roundtable
Network will provide insights from their experiences, followed by a discussion
among the audience and panel members.
