Description:
This
workshop is designed to help the invited participants develop a plan for
research they will conduct in their own classes. The research will be based on
use of TIEE (Teaching Issues and Experiments in Ecology) and guided by
education/cognitive research and theory. Ecologists may be surprised that
faculty can study their own teaching. Seventy five years ago Dewey complained
about the separation of education research and the disciplines being studied,
saying that good teaching depends on “direct participation of those directly
involved in the research”. During the academic year of 2005-2006, faculty will
use a specific aspect of TIEE (e.g., an Issue) and study its effects on student
learning. Researchers will be a “team” in the sense that they have worked
together in the workshop to identify common goals and outcomes and will
communicate with each other over a semester via a listserv. We anticipate that
participants will present their findings at the 2006 ESA Annual Meeting.
