Description:
A group of
rangeland ecologists, sociologists, economists, industry representatives, and
environmentalists has spent 4 years developing indicators to assess social,
ecological, and economic rangeland sustainability. Although the Sustainable
Rangelands Roundtable’s (SRR) work has focused on regional and national scales
within the United States, participants are interested in exploring the
applicability of these indicators in other countries, as well as potential
utility of SRR indicators at smaller spatial scales. Preliminary evaluations
suggest that the indicators apply in several South American countries, however
additional analysis and dialogue is necessary. Workshop participants will review
the SRR’s work to date, including critiques by rangeland scientists from South
America, Asia, and Australia. Discussion sessions will expand upon these
evaluations of international indicator applicability and address efficacy of SRR
indicator-based monitoring at multiple spatial scales. Material generated during
this workshop may be incorporated into future SRR reports and outreach sessions.
