Office
Sunday,
August 7, 1 PM - 5 PM, Meeting Room 511F, Level 5, Palais
des congrès de Montréal
Fee:
$15 US Dollars per person – includes afternoon refreshments and
training.
Minimum: 10
Maximum: 50
Organizers:
Nadine Lymn (nadine@esa.org), Laura
Lipps, Adrienne Sponberg
Description:
Environmental
challenges abound and the research grant pool is growing shallow. Many
ecologists feel compelled to become more involved in shaping policy decisions
impacting the environment as well as their own careers. Whether it is through
meetings with staffers in
Washington
,
DC
,
through one-on-one meetings with Representative X, or via a well-timed and
articulate letter, many ecologists feel ill-equipped to interact with
policymakers and ensure that their concerns are heard. This hands-on workshop
will supply participants with the information and training necessary to
effectively influence policy. Examples used during the workshop will be based on
the U.S. Federal government, but the information is transferable to other
government systems (non-US, state). Following a brief overview of major policy
players and current political realities, workshop participants will learn about
the who, what, when, and where of influencing public policy through three
sessions: (1) Building and
Maintaining Relationships with Policy-makers, (2) Understanding the Federal
Budget Process, and (3) Developing an Effective Message. The workshop will be
capped by mock congressional meetings for participants to test their advocacy
skills. Organizers will provide all workshop participants with handouts that
will be useful in a wide range of policy outreach activities.
