WK-15:
How to do collaborative ecological teaching and research using web pages
and online resources
Sunday, August 7, 8 AM - 12
PM, Meeting Room 513d, Level 5, Palais des congrès de
Montréal
Fee:
$10 US Dollars per person – includes mid-morning
coffee, refreshments, and internet instruction.
Minimum: 8
Maximum: 30
Organizers:
Carolyn Thomas (cthomas@ferrum.edu),
Bob Pohlad
Description:
The
workshop will be lead by ecology professors from six different colleges in the
Southern
Appalachians
(Collaboration through
Appalachian Watershed Studies–CAWS). These professors have been working
collaboratively for 5 years at their home institutions’ delineated watersheds
and at each other’s watershed. The link to “Ecology of Multiple Scales”
theme is through the collaborative research projects like the litter
decomposition study (2004-2005) and the stream macro-invertebrate study (2003)
because they allow us to look at patterns at the local scale and the regional
scale (
S.
Appalachians
). They have been using the
lab exercises from the online Small Watersheds Lab Exercise eManual in a variety
of classes and sharing their data collected on their watersheds by classes. The
workshop activities will include: (1) introduction of watershed program led by
Drs. Carolyn L. Thomas and Bob R. Pohlad; (2) online viewing of eManual led by
Dr. Jeffery Simmons; (3) description of and involvement of participants in lab
exercises from the eManual (i.e., Litter Decomposition is S. Appalachian
Watersheds - A case study in Selecting and Implementing Successful Cross Campus
Collaborative Projects) led by Dr. Karen Kuers; (4) summary of all lab exercises
online led by Dr. Susan Monteleone; and (5) other classroom activities available
in the watershed (all leaders).
