Description:
This
full-day workshop targets graduate students juggling various responsibilities
while “surviving” graduate school: designing and completing research
projects, developing teaching skills, and learning to communicate their
expertise to others. Many skills are essential to excel in teaching and research
arenas and expectations regarding teaching and research are shifting at many
institutions of higher education. Thus, we expect participants to leave the
workshop with new knowledge to increase their effectiveness and efficiency. We
will exemplify this by showing participants how to meld sound pedagogical
(teaching/learning) and research strategies as they meet their many
responsibilities. We will consider several general challenges for novice
educators and researchers through group activities and short presentations: time
management, serving a diverse audience, and professional behavior. We will
address and draw parallels between pedagogical and research-related issues,
including communicating expectations and assessing progress, developing research
hypotheses and learning objectives, using diverse assessment strategies,
assembling timelines, protocols, and syllabi, maintaining consistency while
working as a team member, and understanding safety issues. Handouts including
sources for more information will be provided. Please bring goals/objectives and
syllabi for courses you teach.
