Description:
Sturgeon
species in many areas of the world have suffered significant declines and it
appears that the population of Beluga sturgeon (Huso huso), the main
source of caviar, has declined by more than 90% during the last two decades.
CITES halted trade in Caspian caviar in 2001, and briefly in 2004, then allowed
trade to resume amidst continuing controversy over population estimates and
reported recent recovery of populations. The purpose of this workshop is to
bring together Caspian, Russian, Iranian, European, and American scientists
involved in collecting data on sturgeon, analyzing these data, making population
estimates, and assessing the conservation status of sturgeon species. During the
workshop participants will analyze the best available data on Caspian sturgeon,
especially Beluga, using the best available methods and models to produce
population estimates and develop conservation assessments for Caspian sturgeon
species. Due to the limited size of this workshop, please contact the organizers
for an invitation to participate.
