Description: Arising from the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in
1992, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) seeks to conserve biological
diversity, ensure the sustainable use of its components, and promote the fair
and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic
resources. Recently, Parties to the Convention committed to a more effective and
coherent implementation of the three objectives of the Convention, and to
achieve, by 2010, a significant reduction in the current rate of loss of
biological diversity.
In this guided tour, the Executive Secretary of the CBD and
Secretariat staff will brief participants on the science behind the 2010
biodiversity target, explain the significance of the target for the work of the
Convention, and present the work on indicators of biodiversity. Participants
will have an opportunity to discuss ways and means by which existing
biodiversity indicators for a variety of biomes can be improved to aid
decision-making at global, regional, and national levels. For more information, visit www.biodiv.org.
