Description: Canada and
the United States signed the Air Quality Agreement in 1991 to address issues of
joint national concern, starting with trans-boundary air pollution related to
acid rain. Nearly 15 years later, the ecological science community has completed
research, monitoring, and synthetic studies to characterize the effects of acid
rain on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. This symposium uses the recent
chemical and biological information to evaluate acidification impacts and future
recovery patterns across Eastern North America and assess the effectiveness of
the Agreement in addressing deposition-related impacts. This event provides a
unique balance of ecology and policy from both spatial (atmospheric,
terrestrial, and aquatic ecosystems) and continental (Canada and US)
perspectives. Demonstrating the continued impacts of acid deposition on
sustainable ecosystems and habitats is particularly timely in this case, as both
nations consider further emissions reductions to address trans-boundary
particulate matter transport and its acidification-related precursors.
